Stack of high-quality plywood sheets showing clean edges and multiple even layers

Choosing the right plywood isn’t just about price — it’s also about performance, durability, and how well it suits your specific project. Whether you’re building furniture, lining walls, or tackling a large-scale renovation, here’s how to tell the good stuff from the rest.

More Layers = More Strength

The number of plies directly affects a sheet’s strength and resistance to warping. Good plywood typically has 5 to 13 thin layers, all cross-laminated and pressed together. More layers mean more stability — especially important in humid environments or weight-bearing structures.

The Right Wood for the Job

Different projects demand different cores:

  • Hardwood plywood (like birch) is dense, rigid, and ideal for cabinetry, shelving, and visible applications where durability and appearance matter.
  • Softwood plywood (like pine) is lighter, more flexible, and better for sheathing, roofing, or areas where aesthetics aren’t the priority.

Choosing the wrong wood type can lead to sagging, splitting, or unnecessary overengineering.

Watch the Grain and Finish

High-quality plywood has clean, even grain with minimal knots or patches. The outer veneer should be free from splits, bubbling, or delamination. Defects like these can weaken the sheet, making it prone to splinters, cracking, or peeling over time.

The Glue Matters

Interior-grade plywood often uses urea-formaldehyde adhesives, which are fine for dry conditions. But for exterior, bathroom, or kitchen use, you’ll want marine-grade or WBP (Water Boil Proof) glue. These resist moisture infiltration, preventing swelling and separation in humid or wet environments.

Face Grades Make a Difference

Plywood is graded using a letter system:

  • A Grade – Smooth, sanded, and nearly flawless.
  • B Grade – Slight imperfections, still suitable for painting or staining.
  • C/D Grade – Rougher faces with visible knots, perfect for internal or subfloor applications.
