When you’re crafting beautiful pieces with plywood, MDF, or other panel materials, it’s easy to get caught up in the big picture – the overall design, the perfect cuts, and the assembly process. But it’s often the smallest details that make the biggest difference, and that’s where edgetape comes in.

Edgetape is a narrow strip used to cover the exposed edges of panel products like plywood, MDF, and particleboard. Think of it as the stylish trim that hides the raw, unfinished sides, providing a clean, professional look. While it may seem like a minor addition, edgetape plays a crucial role in both the functionality and aesthetics of your project.

Functionality: Protecting and Preserving

Beyond aesthetics, edgetape serves a practical purpose. It protects the edges of your panels from moisture, impact, and general wear and tear. This is particularly important for MDF, which tends to swell and degrade when exposed to water. By sealing the edges with edgetape, you can significantly extend the life of your project.

Edgetape also prevents chipping and splintering, creating a smooth, safe edge. This is especially beneficial for furniture that will be used by children, or in high-traffic areas where sharp edges could pose a hazard.

Aesthetics: Adding the Perfect Finishing Touch

Edgetape comes in a wide variety of materials, colors, and patterns, allowing you to seamlessly match or complement your chosen panel material. Whether you’re aiming for a minimalist look or a bold statement, there’s an edgetape to suit your style.

At Plyman, we understand the importance of attention to detail. That’s why we stock a range of high-quality edgetapes to match our laminate and timber veneer ranges. Our PVC Edgetape is a durable and versatile option, available in various colors and thicknesses. For a more natural look, our Veneer Edgetape perfectly complements our timber veneer panels.

Choosing the Right Edgetape

The type of edgetape you choose will depend on the material you’re working with, the desired look, and the level of durability required.

PVC Edgetape

Ideal for projects that require a durable, water-resistant edge. Perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, and commercial applications. Plyman stocks PVC edgetapes, mainly 1-2mm thick, in widths ranging from 22mm to 45mm. Available in unglued and preglued options.

Veneer Edgetape

A great choice for projects that use real wood veneers, providing a seamless and natural look. Plyman offers natural veneer edgetapes matching our timber veneer ranges, mainly 0.6mm thick and 22mm to 45mm wide. Also available in unglued and preglued.

Applying Edgetape: A Simple DIY Process

Before you begin, make sure you have these tools on hand:

✅ Clothes iron – for activating the adhesive
✅ Stanley knife – for trimming excess edgetape
✅ Small block of wood – to press the tape down evenly
✅ 120-grit sandpaper – for smoothing sharp edges

Now that you’re ready, here’s how to apply edgetape to your project:

Here are the steps for adding edgetape to your project:

1.  Cut the edging tape slightly longer than the edge you’re covering.

2.  Place the edging so that it overhangs evenly on both sides of the board.

3.  Set your iron to a medium heat setting. Move it slowly along the edging from one end to the other, apply some downward force as you move along. As the adhesive is melting, you will see a small bead expand out from the underside of the edging tape.

4.  To ensure that the edging tape fully adheres to the board, use a small block of wood and move it along the edging from one end to the other while still hot. Continue to apply pressure until the adhesive has cooled and hardened.

5.  Remove the excess edging tape from each end of the board with a Stanley blade. Trim the overhanging edge with an Edge Trimming Tool or Stanley knife.

6.  Remove sharp edges by lightly sanding with 120-grit sand paper.

7.  If a real wood Veneer Edging has been used, then apply the finish of your choice (oil, stain, varnish etc). PVC edging does not require any finishing.

As a friendly reminder, If you’re unsure at any step, always seek professional advice.

Conclusion

Edgetape is the unsung hero of woodworking and DIY projects. It provides both functional protection and aesthetic appeal, elevating your creations from simple to professional.
